The 10U Cobras opened their season this past weekend in Cincinnati playing in the USSSA Hatfield and McCoy tournament at Flash fields. The tournament featured a strong group of teams from Southern Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Michigan. The Cobras played their first pool play game Saturday at 8am with temperatures in the low 40’s. After 4 innings of play, the Cobras were leading the Cincinnati Stix-National 10-2 when the game was called due to rain and cold. The rest of the pool play games were cancelled due to heavy rains and the tournament went directly into bracket play on Sunday.

The Cobras first bracket game on Sunday was a rematch with the Cincinnati Stix-National. It was a close well played game. The Cobras trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth with two outs when Preston Todd hit a ball to the outfield fence for a triple and Jackson Sobel followed with a line drive single to tie the game at 4-4. The Stix scored a run in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Trailing by a run in the bottom of the sixth, CJ Holt led off with a single. After stealing second, CJ scored on a long double by Tyler Lumbard. With no outs and the winning run on second base, Colton Bartoe laid down a perfect bunt and Tyler was able to score on the bunt all the way from second base to give the Cobras the 6-5 walk off win. Jackson Ware got the win in relief of Logan Moore who pitched 5 strong innings.

In the semi-final game the Cobras matched up with the Ohio Force who were coming off a 9-0 victory in their first bracket play game. The Cobras jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed winning the game 8-0 in 4 innings. Cobra’s pitcher TJ White dominated the Force going all 4 innings and allowing only 1 hit which was a bunt single. Tyler Lumbard had 4 RBI’s including a bases loaded double.

In the tournament championship game the Cobras matched-up with the Cincinnati Riverbats. The Cobras jumped out to an early 5-1 lead with timely hitting including balls hit off the fence by both TJ White and Carter James and solid pitching by Jackson Ware. The Riverbats rallied to close the score to 5-4 but the Cobras extended their lead when Danny Collier hit a clutch 2-out 2-run single to extend the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Riverbats rallied again and tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the 6th to set-up a dramatic finish in the bottom of the 6th. The Cobras loaded the bases with no outs on a walk, two stolen bases and two intentional walks and the Riverbats brought in their ace who proceeded to strike out the next two Cobras hitters. With two-outs, the bases loaded and the score tied 8-8, CJ Holt hit an 0-1 pitch off the leftfield fence to score Danny Collier with the winning run to give the Cobras the dramatic 9-8 walk off victory. TJ White got the win in relief of Jackson Ware.

Congratulations to the 10U Cobras for opening their season with a tournament championship!
